My Painting Predicament

I have had some difficulty deciding what color to paint the baseboards in the craft room. I have tried at least a half a dozen colors, most of which can be seen here. A few have even been tried twice and so far nothing is knocking my socks off. That elusive "yes" moment when you know you've nailed the perfect solution for you has yet to present itself to me. Paper Obscenity or Obsession?

The Nightmare Before Remodel

For nearly a year and a half I have been thinking about remodeling my spare room to resemble something like the glossy pictures you see in magazines like "Where Women Create."

The first paint samples were splashed on the wall in Spring of 2009 so while I continued to accumulate and inadequately store "stuff" I have to ask myself what exactly is it that I've been waiting for before moving forward with my project?

They say a disorganized space is a reflection of a disorganized mind but crystal clarity came quickly when my recently divorced, 71 year old father announced he was moving to Arizona to start his new life as a bachelor. I say way to go dad! Then I realized that with him would go my free remodeling help.

There's nothing like a little fire under the arse to get you moving eh? That said, dad and I leave on our road trip to Phoenix on October 23rd which leaves me only 1 weekend to install the hardwood floor I had planned for the space. Me with a rented electric saw is non negotiable so this has to happen before he leaves.

Sooo, yesterday I spent 8 hours cleaning out the room. Closet doors came off to make room for built in shelves and storage, craft supplies were consolidated and 3 hefty bags later the room took on a dramatically different look than it had mere hours beforehand.

The Salvation Army comes Monday to haul away items no longer needed. The plan is coming together beautifully because not only is dad coming over next weekend to put in the floor but brother Pat has offered to help and bring his saw! How cool is that unexpected surprise? By this time next weekend I'll have a brand new hardwood floor installed and step 2 of project craft room will have been completed.

The plan is to move from the kitchen table to a beautifully organized and inspiring craft space, the space I have dreamed of for years and am finally making a reality! I've opened an Etsy boutique, designed a new website from scratch and updated every one my online venues to have a consistent look and feel. While there is nothing in the shop and the website is not entirely complete, I have adopted a "why wait" attitude. I'm just gonna "go for it." Kell Belle Studio Got Decorative Flourishes

This is the logo of my dreams! I have always wanted something with really pretty flourishes just like this. Thanks to the VectorLady I was able to download a vector file of all kinds of decorative flourishes. Having a vector file gave me the opportunity to take these into Freehand and study how they are made so that I could modify them to fit my needs.

To me this is perfection! I still may do some different things with the frame which could end up being one of the ways I distinguish myself from the crowd.

For now, I am excited and proud to have created something so beautiful to communicate what Kell Belle Studio is all about. After spending my entire weekend on this, it's time to celebrate. So, with a glass of Pinot Grigo in hand, I toast to a job well done! I hope you all like it too. :)

Kell Belle Logo Almost Done!

How lucky am I to have an education in graphic arts? I can design my own logos and this one is a beauty! I've about got the new Kell Belle logo nailed down. Outside of a little tweaking here and there, I think what I have not only works beautifully but really expresses who I am and what my work is about.

Design 1

Color theme will be blue-green, lime green and magenta (or vermillion). Right now I'm trying to decide on a frame to use as a possible sign. I can see definite potential for some really unique business card ideas in the tag look above.

Design 2

All I would need to do is add my contact information to the back and perhaps thread the side with some satin ribbon. How cute is that idea?! Of course, you can't go wrong with the classic look without a frame but I would still want to put it on a sign at some point right? I mean, I will need something for the trade shows. (tee hee :)

Design 3

The overall design is very sweet and definitely shows off not only my style but has a personal touch that is all me. Welcome to my life and it's about time I owned it! :)

What Does Abe Lincoln Have to do With Violets?

What's Your Favorite Kell Belle Logo?

I worked all week drawing pages upon pages of tight comps which is graphic design lingo for "moved from thumbnail sketch to a more finished drawing but still not the final." My heartfelt gratitude goes out to those who have voted on these in the past. The pencil sketch that received the most votes was the one I liked best too and is further developed here in the comps.

Design 1

What we as designers discover is that what we think looks good in our rough pencil sketches doesn't actually work once we start drawing it out in ink. The design must be readable to all not just the designer who might be tempted to turn a blind eye to a small case double "L" that actually looks more like two "F's" to everyone else.

Design 2

Giving up an element that I truly like but does not contribute to my overall design can sometimes feel like I'm lopping off a limb but the end result ultimately is worth the sacrifice.

Design 3

With perseverance, I was able to rework the word belle and still keep the elements that made my "L's" look like "F's." It's interesting that my design takes on a life of its own in the same way that any other artistic medium might. Somehow divine intervention takes control during the creative process ultimately producing something even more sacred and beautiful than originally planned. I really love that about art.

Design 4

I think there are some here that work better than others and I definitely have a couple of favorites. Each of them is different in some way although the kell bell part of it remains unchanged in each. I'm going to invite you as my reader to tell me which one speaks to you.

Positive Affirmations 30-Day Challenge

I know there are many artists who currently work a day job that is unfulfilling. Statistically, 60% of the work force are not satisfied with the work they do. In this situation, it is very easy to spiral downward in a whirlwind of negative thinking when faced with spending large chunks of our time doing something that seems to suck all the life and creativity right out of us.

I do believe that thoughts create our reality, and that our experiences come to us as a reflection of our thoughts and attitudes. In order to make changes from without, we must first begin from within. Today I am proposing a 30-day challenge that will assist you in getting yourself in the right frame of mind so that the answers and action steps that are right for you can flow readily into your experience.

I am proposing a 30-day challenge in using positive affirmations to begin making those changes. You can use the ones posted here which are taken from Louise Hay's Wisdom Cards or write your own affirmations. The only requirement is that your affirmations be positive statements that feed your soul, nurture your heart and feel good when you say them. Do not be concerned with how the object of your affirmations will come about, just be willing to accept that the changes will unfold in the most harmonious ways for you.

Say your affirmations out loud every night before retiring and every morning when you wake up. Stand in front of a mirror and say them, say them silently to yourself throughout the day. When you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, become aware and replace the negative thought with an affirmation. They only real work involved with this exercise is that you be consistent and aware of your thought patterns. Do this for the next 30 days and see what happens. Remember, all you have to loose are negative thoughts.

Tip: Erasing Charcoal Pencil Drawn on Acrylic Paint

I made a rather pleasant discovery today while drawing this face in charcoal pencil. First of all, I don't know about the rest of you but most of the time, I do not draw faces I like on the first try. It usually takes me a few passes to get the face or drawing looking the way I want it. This means there is a lot of erasing going on. The other day while browsing the craft store I found an eraser that was supposed to erase charcoal in addition to being good for erasing graphite.

Eager to try it out, I used it while drawing this face but what I discovered was that the eraser alone was not enough. So, I lightly touched the tip of the eraser with a damp towel and voilà! It worked like a charm in erasing the charcoal lines. For a bit more precision and control, you might also try some Q-tips dabbed with a little water to erase then use the dry end for cleanup. Pretty cool eh? Now I can paint her.

Everyday Bliss: Self Discovery in Creative Journaling

It started with a color, an idea and not much else other than I knew I wanted to create a collage in the same style as Kelly Rae Roberts. So, after choosing one of my favorite colors and some snippets of decorative papers, away I went . It is incredibly liberating to create for the purpose of exploration and enjoyment of the process rather than striving toward a polished, finished piece. I can always go back and create a more detailed piece based upon what I've learned here in this study.

I must have painted this face 3 or 4 times and even at this point, I could contemplate for days the depth I see there already. What I discovered in this exercise alone is how much I love the forgiving nature of oil paints but that there are ways of achieving those effects with a medium that dries as fast as acrylics. While this is still a work in progress, I can honestly say that I am in awe of how this is turning out so far and I had absolutely no idea when I started that my collage would resemble anything like this. I am truly grateful to the universe for showing me what is possible simply by embracing a start.

The Myth of Kell Belle Studio

As a child, the kids called me names like Kellie jelly or Kellie belly as a way to antagonize me and it worked every time. My own name followed by something as unimaginative as jelly or belly was about as pleasant to hear as fingernails on a chalk board. Ouch!

Design 1

My sister and I were very close as kids, well, except for the time she leaped over the couch in a single bound and broke her arm. It was an impressive leap from where I was sitting and if that wall hadn't been in the way . . . We had gotten into a fight and I flung her PeeChee (remember those?) across the room sending her school papers flying everywhere. She was so mad at me!

Design 2

As we grew older, she got married, had kids and we sort of drifted apart for awhile. After our mother and step father died in 2004, we began a weekly ritual of getting together on Friday nights to drink wine and watch chick flicks. We didn't have our mom to talk to anymore but we still had each other. Our Friday nights together were a way of honoring and celebrating that.

Design 3

It was during this time that my sister began to call me Kells or Kell Belle which still feels to me like a derivative of that early childhood Kellie belly taunt. This time, instead of being charged with anger and misdirected negativity, it comes from a place of love. It comes from my sister's heart and pierces through mine.

Design 4

Over the next several weeks, I'll be consolidating all of my online accounts (Blog, Twitter, Facebook etc) to reflect this new name. As I do, I'll keep you posted on where to find me. My post today is sprinkled with rough, thumbnail sketches of my new logo design one of which I'll be refining to become my final logo.

Design 5

Do you see one you like? I would love to hear your comments. In the meantime, here is a brief statement about what I am trying to convey in the look of Kell Belle Studio. I approach my ever evolving, mixed media art with the style of a graphic designer and visual artist combined. The logo should covey the clean, crisp, high end feminine quality I have become known for.

Who do I Think I am?

For the past few years, I've watched and followed other artists, all of whom I consider to be successful mostly because they were earning a living doing what they love - their art. The grass always seemed greener on their side of the fence because of the success they now enjoy, success that I have wanted and envied but still have yet to duplicate for myself. This week, clarity has revealed to me that the key to the success I have been looking for lies in my own individuality. Even though I've known this to be true intellectually, I finally understand what it really means in my heart and soul.

Up until now I have tried to be everyone but myself in a variety of ways you may already have noticed but I won't go into them here . How could I expect anyone else to know who I am when I clearly did not know myself? My entire outer world has been a reflection of that mish mash of jumbled and wishy washy intentions that could only ever yield wishy washy results. Changes are coming. The creative life of my dreams is unfolding before me. This photo marks the gateway to a new art venture that is uniquely me. I am proud to introduce you to Kellie Reynolds of Kell Belle Studio.

I didn't have to ponder this question for very long. The words came rushing out through my pen and into my journal. The freedom in the answers felt like I was running through a field of flowers, sun shining, light breeze on my cheeks, not a sound but the birds and the rustling of grasses, wide open space and me, totally and completely present.

If I knew I could not fail I would:

Embrace uncertainty

Enjoy the process rather than attaching to an outcome

Dive in whole heartedly

Try something new every day

Rip, tear and mess up, I can not fail, only move in a new direction

Holding Court With 7 Deadly Toads

I actually moved the refrigerator the other night so that I could clean underneath and behind it. I bought a Swiffer mop and Clorox wipes (wonderful product, no more sponges) for the first time and was wiping the kitchen cupboards just to test them. I even vacuumed! Armed with brand new supplies, cleaning actually took on a Zen like quality for me. (Yeah, the maid used to live here but she apparently walked out some time ago without giving notice . . . not sure what happened there . . . *nervous laugh.*)

Cleaning the dust off the back of the refrigerator? Seriously? The cleaning and even my ramblings about the cleaning are absolutely about masking that underlying discomfort and ignoring those voices that want so desperately to be acknowledged rather than ignored. The ignoring thing still isn’t working for me. I just find more interesting ways of ignoring them but why? So far, I can’t come up with a believable answer to that.

The time has come to put on my big girl pants and shine the light of presence on the fears being shouted by those Toads of mine of which there are about 7. So, right here, right now, I'm holding court. One by one I’ll ask each of them to check in and voice their concerns and I’m going to put it out there for the world to see. Put a clothespin on your nose cause the dirty laundry is gonna get stinky.

The 7 deadly Toads that now sit on the board of directors of my Venomous Toad Committee are as follows along with a few of their more outrageous croaks. Do you recognize yourself in here anywhere? Some of these make me laugh outright and when I write them down I realize just how ridiculous they sound which is helpful in diffusing their power over me.

Money
15 years of creating 3 dimensional paper art forms is still not enough experience to start my e-bay auctions for anything higher than somewhere below minimum wage. (Whaaaat?)

I'm gonna die in my chair working for someone else because I'll never make enough money to support myself with my art. (I'd like to buy myself a clue . . . refer to previous fear)

Cleverly Disguised Excuses
If I start the project, I might mess up and have to start over. (wouldn't be the first time) I’ll think about it while watching a 10- year old re-run of the X-Files and start my project tomorrow. (awareness is the first step)

I’ve got 800 pieces of decorative paper and every craft supply in the known universe but not one of them is suitable for my project. I need more supplies before I can start. (Is the piece of paper I don't have really the hot issue here?)

Publishing
My idea for a book is too different for the publisher to like it or take it seriously. (I'm only giving them a book proposal, not a terminal disease.)

I’m not qualified enough to publish articles and books. (This might actually be true if I were writing about ice fishing in Antarctica)

Selling Online
I can’t create an online selling website because I have other things I need to do first. (like clean dust from behind the refrigerator?)

Social Networking
I don’t know enough to be able to offer any kind of useful information to others. (and yet somehow I've found the courage to maintain a network of 700+ members hmmm . . . . )

The Time Trap
I’ll be dead in 50 years so why didn’t I start doing this sooner? (50 good reasons to start NOW!)

General Fear
You shouldn’t be writing these fears here. None of them are any good compared to what I’ve read about others. (Did I really write this?)

I encourage you to make a list of your fears. Do not censor, just write. There were actually many, many more fears on my list and not one of them really makes any sense to me. Generally, when it comes right down to it, no fear really does and 90% of what we fear never happens anyway so why waste the energy? Flying Lessons

I have felt like I've been in a sort of funk this week. I made a commitment to my creative self that I would go the distance by taking a 12 month journey into my soul via Creative Awakenings. I even signed up for Kelly Rae Roberts' e-course called Flying Lessons.

Flying Lessons is a 5 week course designed to encourage artists to take steps in moving forward to realize their dreams about their art. I signed up nearly 3 weeks after it started. "So you're late, big deal. You can do this, you must do this" said one of the creative whispers of my inner cheering committee. Where has she been this week?

I hear my creative whispers telling me to read, learn, and read some more. The more I do, the louder my Venomous Toad Committee screams as if to drown out those positive voices that tell me “you can do it.” I know I am simply bumping up against a mind created boundary that is not impenetrable and will actually expand the moment I step beyond it. That is a remarkable thing.

I Am Not Afraid to Take Flight ~ Creative Journaling

I spent this past week being "present" in my body and asking myself what it feels like to be me in this moment. What I discovered were mild feelings of anxiety running through me like an electrical current. How long had this been going on? It's curious. I really have no idea because up until now I realize I have lived my life trapped inside in my own head. I have literally been swinging my way through this jungle of life one thought stream at a time, each one leading to the next but never really taking me anywhere.

Putting this in writing helps me to see and understand the ways in which I choose to ignore what my creative whispers have been so desperately trying to tell me, that I am enough right now. I see the ways in which I mask and try to soothe my own discomfort with TV, busy work, mind created excuses in various forms and yes, sometimes even alcohol so that I don't have to face those demons now. But, until I do, my dreams will remain trapped in a future that can never come.

The anxiety is about my fear of confronting my own inner critic and taking action in spite of her. Or, perhaps it's more about loving her enough to push through the fear, that I might actually set my heart free and lead the life I have always dreamed. In my now, I give my heart the space to release thought and trust my wordless soul to carry me through upon the silent winds of beingness. I send love and light to that fearful girl inside who wants only to feel safe and know she'll be okay. I am not afraid to take flight. I am loved. I am safe.

Blissfully Taking Flight

Do you have an inner voice, a gentle whisper quietly nudging you to listen? What does it say? Does it tell you to begin that creative project you've been putting off? Or does it tell you to dream bigger-perhaps start your own creative business? Maybe it's encouraging you to begin writing that book. Or to travel to exotic places. It may just be a whisper, a small voice tucked deep inside the pockets of your heart, but really it's your life calling you.

This is the first paragraph taken from my latest read, Taking Flight by Kelly Rae Roberts. The book is filled with interviews, techniques, beautiful quotes as well as questions for you to ask yourself to help give you the wings you need to take your own flight. I will end this post with two questions from the book to help get you thinking. You can answer them silently, in a comment or in your journals.

The one thing I never thought I could do is: For me, leave corporate work behind forever and make my living creatively without fear that I am the sole provider in a household of one.

Here's how I can make a plan to do it: I can take one small step every day, just one, no matter how scary, until the many add up to the whole and I find myself living the life I always dreamed.

Swimin' With the Fishes ~ TADS Doll No. 5

he Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 5 recently visited Susan DuFresne here in Washington sate and got to swim with the magnificent creatures of the sea. She takes with her a plethora of gorgeous memorabilia from her journey. Susan really outdid herself with an array of beautiful art work. I am truly in awe of the colors and style of these pieces. Due to the large number of photos taken, I have put them in a slideshow for your enjoyment. Viewing these will truly take you to a place of Everyday Bliss.

Susan has named the mermaid in this piece Marina and what a perfect name for Doll No. 5 who, up until now, has been nameless. I think Marina is absolutely perfect!

Everyday Bliss is Having Fairies in the Garden

My Everyday Bliss time was spent finishing up my first dimensional collage. This time I used stamping techniques, stencils and paints to create my own background rather than relying entirely on decorative papers to do the job for me.

Couldn't you just immerse yourself in this for days? Perhaps I'll mediate on it and see what bubbles to the surface. I may discover a hidden secret that's been waiting in my subconscious mind for the opportunity to tell me all about it.

Everyday Bliss: Heartfelt Love and Thanks

To those of you who have left me loving comments after the loss of my kitty, I can't tell you how much I appreciate each and every one. Reading them, I have released sorrow, I have been uplifted and I have shared my grief with those who have lost or are about to loose a critter. My sincerest, heartfelt love and thanks. I have yet to make the rounds but I promise to do something special for you this week. I feel better today, not so many tears. I have come so far in learning to accept the things in life over which I have no control. For today, I am grateful for the peace I have found in this moment and knowing that so many care.

I spent this afternoon and more than 20 minutes of bliss working on my latest dimensional collage with love and appreciation in my heart. Although I have been working on it for awhile, it takes on special meaning now. I don't want to show the whole thing just yet because I don't want to give away the surprise. I hope to post the final photo in the next couple of days if not sooner. It's going to be something. Many hugs to you, dear ladies. Bless you.

Cleansing the Soul With Tears

It's been over 24 hours since I have become petless. I feel like an orphan in a way and I can't seem to stop crying today. I could think of it as cleansing the soul with tears. Everything will be okay. The grand plan is unfolding exactly as it should and I trust the process of life.

These babies have been my comfort even though are only an image on a screen. I think getting new kitties will have a healing effect on me but I have yet to make the appointment. Still getting used to the idea of my routine changing. No 5 pm feedings right now, no litter box cleanings, no napping furbabies at my feet. Every noise that breaks the silence is one that could be a cat but then I remember.

Today I went through my bookshelves pulling books that no longer serve me. I had not intended at all to take care of that chore today but somehow it just felt right. It's funny how the universe will work magic to make things happen with no effort whatsoever. I've heard that in order to make room for the new in your life you have to get rid of the old. I suppose that goes for cats too.

Everyday Bliss in Times of Loss

Today I said good-bye to my feline companion of nearly 17 years. I am sad but peaceful as I know she is in a better place now. I merely released her spirit from an ailing body for I know she has not departed that far. She was the universe expresing itself in physical form. Because I too am made of that same "stuff" I know she is with me always.

I am thankful for the support of family and friends who understand the connection I have always had and will always have to cats. I will look forward to the renewal of life in the joy of bringing home new kittens. For now, I will just "be" intensely present with this moment for awhile and let myself decompress.

License to Bloom

This evening I spent my 20 minutes of bliss signing my Creative Awakenings Visa Application. I also gave it a quick collage technique to personalize it a little bit with some extra meaningful imagery. My recent flower collage page really got me thinking as did some of the comments. The one comment that sticks in my mind describes the pots as representing containers awaiting the planting of new dreams. I really like that.

I am committed to my dreams. I am committed to following the messages given to me by my divine higher self which now come to me in the form of inspired thoughts that lovingly encourage me to take action. By signing this Visa Application, I have put my intention out there into the world not only as a thought form but also in a physical form. It cheerfully greets me as the first thing I see when I open up my dream time journal to remind me that I have now given myself a license to bloom.

Creative Collage: Portal to Possibilities

Sheri Gaynor outlines a 3 step process in her book Creative Awakenings called EnVision Dream Time. During the meditation portion, I asked myself how I could release my resistance to what is? My mother once told me that happiness wasn't a person or a place. I truly thought I had understood that message but my Dream Time collage clearly indicates something else. It indicates that I still believe happiness is a future point in time and I have turned over the care of my hopes and dreams to a concept. I must be insane!

This collage was put together by allowing myself only 20 minutes to gather images and then another 15 to put the collage together. Working fast is something I never do so this was a great exercise. I wanted to trust the process and allow my intuition to guide me as much as possible. Over the next month, I will contemplate the meaning of the images, I'll add paint, rubber stamps and transform it into my art of intention.

From these images I can see that part of the reason my dreams have not yet manifested is because I have held them in a place where it isn't possible for them to do so. The wooden arch is about bridging that gap between tomorrow and the now, opening up the portal to possibilities so to speak. The page with the flowers is about nurturing those dreams and giving them space to grow into something beautiful in the now. Up until this minute I really had no idea what the flower page was trying to tell me but it makes sense now. It will be fun to watch these pages transform during the month of June. It's going to be fun to get in touch with that little child within who has gone neglected for so long.

Somewhere Between Tomorrow and Someday

Yesterday I wrote about the inspiration I found in the latest issue of Where Women Create. While I was busy reading the stories, my creative mind was pouring over the cottage style charm of some of the spaces that were featured there. I have often dreamed of having an airy art studio with distressed white furniture, neatly stacked shelves lined with baskets and apothecary jars that would organize every craft supply I own right down to the last micro mini brad. That dream has always remained just beyond my reach because I managed to place it somewhere between tomorrow and someday.

I realized that tomorrow and someday live only as thoughts in my head that anything that ever happens can only do so right now. Without giving much thought to any decisive action today, I ended up at the Home Depot on my lunch hour where I spent more than 20 minutes of bliss picking out paint colors for my brand new art studio. I purchased three tester colors, 2 in the blue green hues and one very light yellow. After putting the colors on my wall, I find the combination needs a bit of tweaking and that's okay. The important thing here is that I took a step toward my dream and tomorrow I'll take another and the day after that I'll do the same until the day I find myself working on paper dolls from my beautiful new dream studio.

Everyday Bliss is Where Women Create

20 minutes of bliss turned into 45 minutes of being utterly inspired by the lives of creative women. I went into Barnes & Noble with the specific purpose of selecting a magazine I could rip up for my creative collages. What I found was Stampington's latest issue of Where Women Create.

Today I spent my lunch hour reading stories of women with the courage to follow their dreams even under sometimes harsh conditions and economic uncertainty. Those stories also had another effect. They made it crystal clear to me that I'm still gripped by the fear of leaping into the abyss never to return or worse, living out of my car! Oh, I can hear the symphony of my Venomous Toad Committee playing to the tune of "You can't do it because . . . " *sigh*

Birth of a Le Jardin Fuchsia

Today is day 2 of my Creative Awakenings journey. While in the throws of my 20 minutes of everyday bliss, I received instructions for something new. My delightfully creative mind gave birth to the dimensional fuchsia. Before I go further I must confess a perplexity over the spelling of that particular word - fuchsia. Its elusiveness sends me to the dictionary every time while one question runs through my head like a ticker tape. Why that spelling? Eckhart Tolle would simply say, stop thinking, it's not important. I like that advice.

That zone of creativity where there are no words is truly a blissful state indeed. I find myself putting things together that I may not have otherwise thought of and it makes me feel like the queen of originality, at least for a moment or two. Working small and detailed is the person I have identified with for so long. I wonder to what extent that will change while on this journey. Maybe it won't. What powers do the fine details have over me that make me unwilling to let them go? It might be nice to venture beyond them, to step back and focus on the panorama instead of the bulls eye, if only for a little while right? The answer is yes, just not today.

Everyday Bliss Day 1

Today is day 1 of my Creative Awakenings journey. This chick has taken flight with 38 others from The Artful Paper Doll Ning network and charted a course of discovery into our inner selves through creative collage and journaling.

Everyday bliss is about doing something, anything that brings me total enjoyment for 20 minutes a day. Today was about working on this background for a new dimensional collage that will incorporate one of my fairy dolls. I loose all sense of time when I am creating. In the moment that happens, I know on a level of being that can not be explained by words or thoughts, that I am fully connected to the infinite.

Taking the Journey on the Creative Awakenings Express

It's so funny because I purchased Creative Awakenings months and months ago but never even really cracked it open. I guess I simply wasn't ready to hear the message it had to deliver . . . until NOW. The things you want most are always right in front of you but you won't see, hear, touch or smell them until you are in a place where you can, until you are a vibrational match to what you are asking for.

I just finished reading The Power of Nowby Eckhart Tolle and something within me boomed with loud clarity, "read Creative Awakenings NOW." Yesterday I began reading the book and wondered what in the world I was waiting for all this time. Within the pages was everything I could have hoped for both in terms of something I could share with my network as well as helping me move past the obstacles that stand in my way!

It is my pleasure to use this book as a workbook for facilitating change both in myself and others. If you have been wondering how to move past pain, fear, self doubt or whatever holds you back, please come join me in the Creative Awakenings group for a 12 month journey of creative discovery. Here we will create a dream journal, learn new techniques, get to know the inner you and you will have the support of your fellow group members to help you along the way.

It may not take 12 months before change begins to happen, in fact it probably won't but consider making the commitment to yourself for at least that long just to see where the journey takes you. This life is about enjoying the sail boat ride, not power boating madly to the destination.

Getting Serious About eBay Auction Templates

The Artful Paper Doll is getting serious about the business of selling paper dolls. I recently took a trip down eBay auction template lane looking for a way to spice up my listings and make them stand out a little bit.

The plan is for an upscale, boutique look to my virtual gallery space on eBay and also on The Artful Paper Doll network. During my search I came across the most darling auction templates created by Laura Gage of Store for Moms. In fact, I was so captivated by Laura's work that I published a Q & A article about her work on Examiner.com

Laura is now collaborating with Italian software engineer, Pasquale Imaio. Together they will be offering a brand new look for eBay auction templates and storefront designs like the one shown above. Congratulations Laura, that really is terrific news. :)

Common Garden Fairies Have Feelings Too!

Do you believe in magic? The other day, whilst chatting with one of my garden fairies about what kind of flowers to plant the garden with this season, I happened to casually mention that I thought she was common. Oh my! What a mistake that was and it stirred quite a furry in the studio.

I can tell you that little sprite flew around the room like mad woman on fire and I've got the cuts on my forehead to prove it! She buzzed me so many times I'm surprised my hair isn't spiked by now although I am hopeful that my missing eyebrow will grow back. YIKES!!

Fairies! They can be so sensitive! After all, my use of the word common was not meant to imply ordinary nor did I intend for it to be derogatory in any way. You really don't want to upset your fairies like this because they have abilities far beyond what could be termed common or ordinary. She simply required nothing more than my acknowledgement of that. I'm in deep trouble now because if I thought she was good at hiding my craft supplies before, it will be doubly so now.

We've agreed it would be best if she find a home in another garden, one where the humans at least treated her like the uncommon princess she really is, one where her talents could truly be appreciated. However, she won't be cheap! Gosh, if I even mention that who knows what will happen next. This fairy is willful, stubborn, mischievous, playful, an utter delight, beautiful, magical and looking for love someplace besides my studio.

She is sure to bring you joy, share many uplifting conversations with you and add opulent beauty to your flower garden. She may not look like anything more than a paper art doll to you but I assure you, she will animate if you are ready to see and believe. Spring Break Fun in California

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 4 aka Queenie played in the surf and sun over a Spring Break vacation with Gloria Carson and her son. I can only imagine what Queenie's response might be to her recent trip. The words that come immediately to mind are "What a rush!"

Queenie writes this from her travels to Capitola: I decided to accompany Gloria and her son on a spring break vacation to Capitola, California. Seriously, if you have never visited this part of California, it's awesome! Location, near Santa Cruz, California, beach, ocean, surfing, skate boarding, great restaurants, and the most beautiful scenery. I tried my hand at both skate boarding and surfing. I must say spring break was really action packed. . . .

Sounds like our Queenie had a blast. Gloria, please give yourself a hug and a big heartfelt thanks from me for participating in the TADS project and for showing are Queenie such a gloriously good time filled with exciting new experiences.

Are you Cinderella or the Queen?

It is our own attitudes that determine our station in life and has nothing to do with what anyone outside of us thinks. Who are you and which one of these sounds more like you? Are you Cinderella, often putting the needs of others before your own and allowing them to dictate your life purpose? Are you a princess or prince, worthy but still, somehow not quite good enough to have it all? Or, do you think like the queen/king you came forth into this life to be? You need neither a crown nor subjects but you are indeed the queen/king of your life. You are meant to live a joyful and abundant one.

I had an experience this week which made me realize just how powerful imagery can be. Please see the Playful in Pennsylvania post for a photographic journey into one of Bella Rosa's (TADS Doll No. 1) recent visits. Because this doll has my face on her, it had quite an effect to see myself staring back at me from the loving hands of a child. A woman about to give birth, took the time to knit a little dress entirely from ribbon for the doll. She also shared the journal with her art students so that they might know how other artists are sharing with the world. How priceless is this? I truly feel like a queen, rich in love and tender care.

Imagine you are the queen/king this month (and beyond). Walk like you have a cape and crown on and believe yourself worthy of every good thing. Say it silently to yourself throughout your day. Nobody has to know what you are doing and this exercise will go a long way in helping you shift how you think about yourself. Notice how this feels in your body and in your mind. Did your posture improve? Do you feel just a little more confident? Write or paint about the experience(s) in your journal.

This month is about turning yourself into the queens and kings you are. Make a muse with your face on it. Yes, it must be YOUR face. Putting a doll with your face in your journal surrounded by magazine clippings, pictures, notes or drawings that inspire you will be more powerful and effective than using a random piece of clip art.

Heather: My heart is pounding! Can it be? Yes, she has finally arrived in the snow laden month of January 2010.

Kitty Kellie: The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 1 aka Bella Rosa got to spend play time with Heather McAndrews and her young ones in Pennsylvania this past winter. Heather, Shannon and Jacob have a story to share with you about their time with Bella Rosa. Since nobody can tell it quite like they can, I write this post in their words.

Heather: I couldn't wait to set her free. My excitement building as I unwrap her pretty pink tissue and untie the green ribbon.

Bella Rosa: My new young fan Shannon introduces me to her friendly fashion friends.

Belle Rosa: Shannon couldn't wait to get started on the extra-special designer paper-feather dress that she created just for moi.

Bella Rosa: I take a moment to pose with one of my younger fans. I'm wearing the multi-colored, paper-feather dress that Shannon designed for me.

Bella Rosa writes: Dear Diary, today I met Shannon. She showed me her barbie. Her name was Rosey. She showed me some clothes. She also made me some pretty clothes that were pretty too.

Bella Rosa: Cozy winter duds on the way! Heather takes a break from knitting booties to begin my new ribbon dress.

Kitty Kellie: Heather is awaiting the birth of her 3 child very soon so I am deeply touched that she took the time to knit this precious little dress for our girl.

Heather: A quick snap as my January journal entry comes together. The dress is finished and ready for a fitting.

Bella Rosa: Say yes to the dress! While the children were at school, Heather was quick to convince me that I should consider getting my ears pierced. I jumped at the chance and before I knew it I was sporting my silver hoops.

Bella Rosa: Heather's whole family took part in my creative visit. Jacob and Shannon couldn't wait to create their very own paper dolls. Here we are for our fashion photo-shoot.

Pearlized Paper fit for Royalty in Papyrus

Sources indicated today that Pearlized Filagree, a light weight, decorative paper, might have been used as doll skin in the paper doll city of Papyrus. Chosen for its pearlescent design and light, creamy color, it is believed that this paper was used in the creation of royalty or the more elite dolls. Archedollogist Kitty Kellie had this to say.

It would appear that this paper is somewhat rare as evidenced by the $4.95 price tag for one sheet so it would make sense that Papyrus would reserve this skin for its most elite dolls such as princesses, queens or even their treasured fairy folk.

Now that I had an accurate pattern for cutting my doll parts and the paper that would serve as the foundation for doll assembly, it was time to begin looking for a decorative paper with which to cover my pieces.

The idea was to find a paper that was not only light weight but light enough in color that it would look like a flesh tone. The paper design had to be subtle enough that it would not compete with the collage and rubber stamping techniques I planned to add.

I found something called Pearlized Filagree on the very bottom rung of one of the columns of paper. It was hidden underneath a stack of other paper as if it was waiting for the perfect project before allowing its discovery. Did I choose the paper or did the paper choose me?

What in the World is Archedollogy?

A map of some sort was discovered today deep in a Paris archive. It appeared to be a schematic for a paper doll body believed to have origins dating to the time of the legendary lost temple of Papyrus. Leading archedollologist, Kitty Kellie comments:

What an exciting find for us. This map is physical evidence that the paper doll city of Papyrus actually did exist and we are closer than ever to discovering the lost temple where the artifacts of Papyrus are thought to have been stored. There's just one small problem with the map.

Setting up a template for a life sized paper doll required enlarging one of my existing patterns to nearly 400% of its original size. The entire schematic would span 21 letter sized pages and print beautifully with my printer set for borderless printing. . . . or so I thought. The first snag in the project would require a little more ingenuity to get the pattern to print correctly and was overcome with the discovery of a tool called Tiler, a free program that allows printing of large graphics over multiple pages.

The Papyrus Project and my Wild Imaginings

My mother once gave me the secret to being an artist. It was actually a poem of sorts with short, whimsical statements about how to be an artist. The one that most comes to mind reads: Have wild imaginings, transformative dreams and perfect calm.

While sitting in traffic yesterday, I began focusing my thoughts toward the one thing in life that never fails to give me pleasure, my art. Visions of paper dolls danced in my head while new ways of making dolls that would give my buyers a personal connection to my work just came one after the other. All were exciting to think about but the still small voice within whispered. "Think bigger."

Okay, how about a life sized, dimensional paper doll, I thought and I don't mean that in a celebrity-card-board-cut-out-you-see-in-the-movie-theatre kind of way either. It was perfect but the still small voice offered counsel yet again. "Yes, she whispered, "keep going." Not only will this doll be life sized but she has a story to tell.

Oooh! On that note, I could hardly contain my excitement! I had to get started right away but what do you do when you work full time? You go shopping on your lunch break of course. Bellevue Art and Frame would be my first stop. Paper is the foundation of the work and only the finest quality would do. I spared no expense in using the buyer rewards certificate I'd been carrying around for months. My first purchase would be French Aquarelle Arches paper.

I love water color paper, especially cold pressed. There is something just fresh and crisp about this textured, deckled edge paper that speaks directly to the very core of my artist being. So it begins and I've decided to take you with me on a journey of discovery to the lost temple of Papyrus where you are sure to find whimsy, intrigue, adventure and perhaps even reconnect with your inner child.

The Secret Slippers of Marie Antoinette

If Marie Antoinette had little slippers made especially for her by her garden fairies, where might she hide them from the prying eyes of the non-believers? (tee hee :) I'm obsessed with Marie or perhaps I am just obsessed with her obsession for pretty things. Happily, I know I am not alone.

Free Standing Audrey Hepburn Paper Doll Speaks

She strikes a pose as if to say "I told you so." These dolls of mine speak to me in the most celestial ways. They use not words but blocks of thought that come in the form of creative ideas.

What makes me pick up that particular bit of scrap and hold it up to a waist or bust? How is it that I came to add gathered tule to a butterfly wing? It was not part of my original plan and yet that scrap has brightened up this doll like no other could, like it was, quite simply, meant to be.

Resisted desires to make her more elaborate in some way came in the form of whispered kisses, an acronym for "keep it simple, stupid." Over and over again I heard them. Audrey is classic simplicity, in her case less is more. Everything about this piece works so beautifully and yet I can claim little responsibility for her outcome. I am simply the tool that gave her life.

My creative muse is with me always, a special gift to me sent directly from the divine. I know not always what her messages will be but she always has a way of revealing them to me in exactly the moment they are needed. Her messages to me are simply the answers I was asking for in those moments of utter grace and complete surrender to the process.

I give you Audrey. Striking, stunning and with a "kiss" I leave you to your own conclusions.

Traditional Beauty for a Paper Doll Classic

Several weeks ago I posted a free paper doll template for your use. I asked that anyone using it, point me to the images so that I could post here as inspiration to others.

Linda of Considerations posted this traditional tabbed outfit with all kinds of trimmings that fit beautifully into a hand made, organza bag.

Even traditional dolls can have dimension added to them with lace and feathers. This also makes a perfect swap idea for your groups. Send the doll with a dress and trimmings and let the recipient decide how to decorate it. Thank you Linda, for this timeless contribution.

Declaring March as Marie Madness Month

Lately, I have begun to feel the gentle kiss of spring upon slightly warmer breezes. Little by little, the days are getting longer and nature is beginning to awaken from her winter slumber. Creative ideas are swirling in my head like whirlpools in a stream about this whole March madness thing. What exactly is that all about anyway?

If March is going to be madness then why not make it Marie Madness. Besides, all those m words seem to fit nicely together don't you think? To celebrate, I plan to offer royalty free images during the month of March for you to use in your Marie projects. I Wanna be a Cowgirl ~ TADS Project

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 4, aka Queenie, visited the wild west this week and went ridin' with Ginger Tatro at the Flying "R" Ranch. Queenie even found herself a new pony!

Queenie writes: Whew, what a trip! I arrived at the Flying "R" Ranch in good spirits and ready to tackle a new adventure. Oh, what an adventure it was! I went horseback riding and got my very own pony to ride. What a blast! I'm taking some riding clothes and a new suitcase with me on my travels now . . . and wonder where I'll wind up next . . .

When I think of the west, I think of denim, red cotton bandanas, brown boots, picturesque scenes of wide open spaces and of course ponies. I can almost hear the sound of the wind blowing across the prairies and smell the wild grasses. The details of this piece capture western life so beautifully. Ginger, thank you so very much for participating in the project. I just love this piece right down to the articulated horse!

Welcome to Bal Masque 2010

With carnival celebrations taking place around the world this time of year, the Artful Paper Doll proudly gives you the Bal Masque. The purpose of this blog event is to connect artists in celebration of their artistic expression through the decoration of a carnival mask. The proposition of a blank anything, can be intimidating as I discovered while creating my mask for this event. What does one do? In my Scarlett O'Hara moment, I went to bed of course and decided I would "think about it tomorrow."

Ah, but the universe had other plans for me and left me to slumber with a question that seemed to pop into my head from out of nowhere. What would Marie do?

We know what this one did but I was thinking of something a little more girlie. Pink, ruffles, lace, white, satin, ribbon, green, roses, paper filigree, lots of glitter, pearls, feathers, the ideas just kept coming.

The inner voice echoed thoughts of pretty vintage papers, scripted advertisements and aged ephemera.

It must sparkle and shimmer in sublime elegance befitting a queen.

Soften the look with signature finishes of satin, laces, feathers and pale pink roses.

Nature's delicate beauty, her symbol of transformation makes a perfect embellishment.

Paper filagree and miniature rose bouquets are decadent as a frame completing the look of this precious little mask.

I am Cinderella at her first ball, I am Marie, I can be anyone I want to be. See you next year!

Little paper corsets have become a fast favorite of mine. They add elegance with a hint of risque to my paper dolls.

Pink is For Passion

In that state between dream and wake she whispers, pink is for passion. Pink is emotional. It speaks to you from your heart. Follow your heart and it will always guide you straight and true. My passion seems to have guided me in the direction of pretty, little paper dolls, each with their own messages for me. As I create each one, I find they become what they want to be even if my original plan is different.

My girls teach me lessons about my true self. They offer wisdom, encourage me every step of the way and challenge me to try something new. Sometimes I find that they can even be a little mischievous, relocating craft supplies when my head is turned or magically placing a different colored dress in front me. My paper princesses seem to have a life of their own. I love each and every one and no matter what I do, I find that the glow of my pink passion is never far off.

Journal Writing Prompts: The Masquerade Ball

One of the things I promised to do for myself this year is to start a journal of self discovery and change. Since we are coming up on carnival season, I thought a masquerade ball theme would make the perfect first journal writing prompt. We all wear masks in one form or another but tonight I can be anyone I want to be. So, who will I become? Will I choose to play it safe and blend in with the crowd as I have always done before?

Or, will I begin to break old patterns? Will I take a chance and allow myself the freedom to be who I really am, to be the person I always knew I was or wanted to be? I've kept that vulnerable girl in me hidden away for far too long, afraid of being hurt. No one would know it was me. From behind the safety of my mask, I can be anyone I want to be.

I feel my fear dissolve it's grip as I begin to make new choices. With each tiny step I move toward the changes I have always wanted to make but never knew exactly how. I know that I am safe. I trust the process of life to support and guide me. I water with love and feed with care, that little child within, until she blooms like the bright shining, magnificent individual she always was. I can toss the masks, they serve me no longer. I am free to let myself stand above the crowd, free to be myself at last.

Carnival Venezia ~ It's Party Time!!

The Christmas gifts have been unwrapped, eggnog has been consumed, *hiccup* and many of us will be eating ham sandwiches for days. So what's next? If you thought Valentine's Day, that's a nice enough holiday alright but might I suggest something a little less traditional and perhaps infinitely more fun? How about a masque paper doll ball.

February marks carnival season in countries around the world. From Venice to Rio to our very own New Orleans, you won't find a shortage of celebrations to occupy your time.

It is in the spirit of Carnival that I offer up the idea for my newest online tutorial called Carnival Venezia in which we will create a doll similar to what you see here. Further details about this tutorial are coming.

Think elaborate costumes, piles of plumage, yards of fabric, rich, dramatic colors and you will begin to have an idea about the visual feast that carnival offers. If you absolutely must do something to satisfy your inner Valentine's Day lover, why not adapt this exciting theme and use pinks as your color scheme. You could even turn her into the queen of hearts!

Paper Craft Ideas: Let them eat cake!

"Let them eat cake," she said. Although Marie Antoinette never actually said that, what she meant was if you don't have what you are looking for, why not use a suitable substitute?

I needed an image of a cake for a Marie Antoinette paper doll I was making. I, an artist (dare I say it) went looking for a piece of clip art at Dreamstime in order to save myself some time. Oh, I can just hear the collective gasp now!

I was not able to find an image of a cake that I liked much less one I thought would work for my purposes so I set out to make one. The video will show you the process for making your own paper cake.

The story has a happy ending though. My paper cake turned out even more beautifully than I could have hoped to find someplace else and works most perfectly in my project. So, the moral of the story is that what you seek can not be found outside of you. believe in yourself and the universe will provide you what you need.

Paper Hair and Paper Dresses: Marie Antoinette Style

Marie Antoinette was well known for her extravagant dresses and her towering hair. This art doll creation pays tribute to a great lady with a divine paper dress fit for a queen and a stunning paper hair treatment.

Marie's dress is made of crepe paper that was embellished with ink pens and stamps to create an elegant, brocade pattern. The video below is a quick tutorial of the pattern making process used to make the dress.

Marie's hair may have been tall but we secretly admire and appreciate the artistic expression found in that glorious coiffure. She was rather restricted in many ways. If she were living in today's world, she might have rebelled by dying her hair purple and piercing her tongue. I think I like her way better.

This paper hair treatment gives a very unique look to this paper doll. Not only is paper hair fun to make but it is also very easy. Not all craft stores are equal. Although popular paper craft supplies may be conveniently available in some areas, others are not so fortunate and must look a little harder to find these items. I hope to be of assistance by providing online sources to help you find the craft supplies you are looking for. In such cases where ordering online is the only way to get the product short of making a flight reservation, it is helpful to read product reviews before purchasing. I know that if I can't touch before I buy, reading a few reviews and seeing photos of how the product has been used by others goes a long way in helping me make my decision.

Paper Craft Techniques
I find it very satisfying to be able to present short videos and tutorials of paper craft techniques I enjoyed creating. In fact, it would be nice to present the art world with techniques they didn't even know they wanted yet, such as my collage patterned crepe paper. Are you interested in sharing a craft technique? I would love to hear from you.

Collage Style Patterned Crepe Paper

I have yet to see anyone embellish their crepe paper before turing it into something beautiful like those rosettes you see gracing vintage and cottage style art work everywhere these days. After playing around with stamps and inks, I decided to draw rose buds on a butter yellow crepe paper I planned to use to create my fairy tale style paper doll dress.

I have posted a video on the technique which is simple and can give you some stunning results. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it. If you like it, please link back to this post or leave a comment. I think it is nothing short of magnificent, if I do say so myself.

Just saying the words, I can almost taste the yummy goodness of buttercream frosting. Its silky smooth texture glides gently over my tongue and tantalizes me with its delicate, sweet flavor. I chose a couple of my favorites to show you here in order to give you a taste of what Tami has to offer.

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 1 aka Bella Rosa had a delightful visit with Amy Sperry Faldet in a Such a Wondrous Place this Fairytale Space called Wisconsin. Thank you so very much, Amy for the delicate beauty of this magical contribution.

How does a fairy get her wings? I have often pondered that myself. I used to imagine that if I could just reach the end of the rainbow, that place where earth and sky meet in dreamlike splendor, there would be my treasure also.

But as I journeyed forth upon my path, I discovered that the more I chased this brilliant spectrum of colorful light, the more she playfully eluded me until one day I just gave up. In that moment of complete surrender and acceptance of her true nature, she wrapped her loving radiance around me so completely that I too was flying with the clouds.

If you still wonder where your fairy wings await you, look no further than the center of your being. Your heart is where true beauty lives. You'll find the pot of gold is there within, waiting only for you to realize your own magnificence and radiate it outward to a world that loves you in return.

Pink Roses, Friends and Fine China

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 4 aka Queenie had a delightful visit in California recently where she was the guest of honor at a garden tea party. Becky of Rebecca Rose Designs contributes this visual picture of elegance that would make the Queen herself blush with pride.

What could be more heavenly than afternoon tea with your best girls, in a garden sanctuary? I hear there are still places where fall has not yet managed to take a firm grip and warm, summer breezes linger still. I dream of fine china, pink roses and the scent of nostalgia as we reminisce of the events that have shaped our lives.

Henry James once wrote, "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

What better way to celebrate this moment with friends than with fancy hats, sweeping cotton dresses in floral prints and of course, our best bling. Come laugh with me over cucumber sandwiches, frosted cakes, and a spot of herb tea.

I Love You Challenge ~ Update

I stood in front of the mirror today as I normally do just before and after the shower and I studied myself. I studied my expression, my shape, how it felt to be me. I put my hands upon the bulge at my belly, I looked into my own eyes and smiled as I said out loud, I love every inch of you! I repeated the process with other areas of my body that I have wanted to change. As I spoke those words I noticed a peculiar thing. I felt relief as my body relaxed and tension eased. The child within felt nurtured and loved for who she is in this moment and not what someone outside of her thought she should be.

Try repeating some of the following affirmations in front of your mirror every day for 30 days and see what happens. You may not feel it at first but keep doing it. I also encourage you to write your own affirmations that feel good to you.

I love and approve of myself therefore I earn a living doing work that I love and feel passionate about, working with and for people who love and respect me, in a beautiful location and earning money beyond my fondest dreams.

I am worthy of the abundance of ______ and I openly accept it now.

I love and approve of myself, therefore I choose positive, uplifting thoughts.

I am willing to forgive myself and I set myself free.

I lovingly and easily forgive and release the people and limiting beliefs of my past.

Shoppin' With Dem Wild Wimin

Kim of Tabby's Place contributes this energetically visual representation of "girls day out" that fills the imagination with excitement and wonder. I am deeply appreciative for this thoughtful entry to the TADS project. Thank you, Kim for your participation.

I know that thinking back to my own shopping adventures with "the girls" (mainly my sister) when I was able to let my hair down for a little while and just have fun, I realize it was not the money or the items from which I received the most joy. It was the experience of feeling inspired and nurtured by those blessed creatures I was with. Letting go of any emotional attachment to an outcome resulted in the most memorable experiences of my life.

I love money. Money brings freedom and there is plenty of happiness in that thought alone however, money is nothing more than paper and metal with no deeper meaning than that which we give it. Shopping with my sister just before our first trip to the Caribbean brings me joy even today when I look upon the items I still have from that adventure. Money can buy happiness but the extent to which it does rests entirely with you and your own thoughts about it. If you aren't happy in your mind, no amount of money could possibly purchase enough things to soothe your unhappiness unless you are willing to first change your thoughts.

Saying Good-Bye to Kitty

For the first time in my adult life, I put one of my beloved companions of 16 years to his final rest this past Wednesday. I thought I would be able to handle putting up a Pink Saturday post this week in spite of it all but I am just not up to it. I apologize to Beverly who works so hard in putting this together for us but I know she understands and I hope you will too. I will have some thoughts to share about what I have learned about this experience but I will save it for a later time. For now, I'll share a photo of my surviving kitty. Obviously she is not pink but she is keeping me in the pink during this difficult time.

The "I Love You" Challenge

Today I implement a project for facilitating change in myself. I call it the "I Love You" Challenge. I am challenging myself to break out of my old beliefs that play like a broken record almost daily in the form of my own limiting thoughts. We all have them. The question is what is what are you willing to do now to let go of them? What would it be worth to you if you knew that the end result would be the life you always wanted but never allowed yourself to feel worthy of? Starting today I take one small step to replacing the recording with messages of hope, belief, positive expectation and gratitude. All it takes is the willingness to change. Today I begin to think in ways I never have before. View the video for details.

I am asking you to share the experience with me and write about your results. I have posted a link in the sidebar of my blog called The "I Love You" Challenge. I invite you to post your comments about your experiences with this. What happened? How did your life change? Not only will this benefit you but it will give hope to and help inspire others to think about taking the challenge for themselves. The changes may not be an earth shattering ones, although that can happen. Just be aware of even the slightest shift in events happening around you. It could be having green lights all the way down the busy highway you take during your daily commute. It could be getting a parking spot by the front door for the first time. Keep your eyes open. This is your indicator that change is happening. Lastly, be patient.

"The Queen arrived in Melbourne. It was spectacular. She was met by a huge florilla of boats. Her reception was warm and enthusiastic wherever she went.

Color is the language of light. So true is this that can not help but comment on the colors of this exquisite collage. The rich, warm tones of the yellow-oranges, pinks and blues is the very representation of Australia as I imagine it to be with it's bright, golden landscapes, magnificent sunsets, warm turquoise waters and unrivaled coral reefs. The combination can be described as nothing short of perfection!

Is she bald or is that Wisteria on her head?

Is this not the most exquisitely decadent paper hair ever to grace the head of a paper art doll anywhere in the world? Actually her faux hair is hand made wisteria that I put together leaf by leaf, vine by vine several years ago and never used . . . until now. This of course is not the final "do" but you get the idea where I am headed with it. I see so much possibility in this paper art doll bust that I find it difficult to contain my excitement about it. You've seen sculpted busts made of papier mache, polymer clay and what not but have you ever seen one made out of paper?

Dreams Really Do Come True

Renee, she is the picture of dreamy with the soft, feathery looks and pastel colors. She is just beautiful and I thank you for being part of the magic of this project.

Potion No. 9: Beauty Divine

Wouldn't it be nice if we could drink a potion that would release us from any resistant thoughts about the world and our place within it? Like Dorothy and the ruby slippers, the secret of Potion No. 9 has always been within us from the beginning. We just had to learn it for ourselves. Today I am reminded of the beauty that surrounds me all the time if I can just set still long enough to appreciate it.

Sultry Eyes and Pretty Girls

I finally spent some time watching the Suzi Blue videos I downloaded from her La Petit Dolls online tutorial almost a year ago. Suzi's work is not only uplifting in theme and color choice but I find her to be a down to earth woman with a caring style. She will dare you to release the inner critic and learn to embrace the artist within.

While on a cruise last October, I came across this image included in one of the ship's newsletters. Her eyes are so gorgeous that I simply had to find a way to recreate this look in my pretty girl drawings. Using the techniques presented by Suzi, I set forth to create drawings of pretty girl faces that not only reflected my own style but could be used to replace the vintage images that now appear on my paper dolls.

I believe this drawing captures the look I was going for. Look for more drawings like this to appear both on my paper dolls and on collage sheets for use in your creative works.

The Magic of the Lilies

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 5 experienced magic in Michigan as she spent time in Debbie's enchanted garden of Star Gazer Lilies. Thank you Debbie. She is positively stunning. I would even say that her brilliant colors resemble those of the surreal landscapes of dreamland.

Today I visited the magical flower gardens of my dear friend. She showed me all of her favorite flowers.

There was one in particular that really caught my eye. My friend told me that this was her magical flower. With one whiff, we were drenched in its aroma and in the blink of an eye we were suddenly in Fairy Land.

As my friend and I fluttered about in our flower attire and sparkling wings we discovered many a delight.

Sit quietly in your garden sometime. Let the warm summer breezes whisper gently in your ear. If you are very very lucky, your garden fairies may choose to reveal themselves. When they do, get ready to begin your own magical adventure with these playful beings.

This is such a gorgeous and informative interview and I am so excited to be able to share it with my readers. I read your About Me paragraph on your blog and came across this statement: “I wouldn't consider myself an artist or even remotely in the same league as my favorite bloggers.” Your pieces are incredibly beautiful and creative. I believe creativity comes in many forms even in forms others may not consider to be artistic. Why do you not see yourself an artist?

I wrote that statement a long time ago when I first started my blog and I was pretty unsure of myself and the blogging community. With that said, I am still slowly getting use to being called an artist. I just think of myself as a really crafty or artistic person. As a child I always excelled in art classes and when I was in college, I thought I would major in art and become a graphic artist. I took one semester of various art classes in college and for the first time in my life, I wasn’t excelling in art like I did in the past. I suddenly felt insecure about my abilities and then questioned if this was the career choice or major for me.

After taking some business classes, I changed my major to Marketing and never looked back on the world of art. It was quite a big switch in my life and I stopped creating all together. Thinking back, maybe I was just too busy with normal college life and I didn’t have the capacity to be creative and go through college. Through the years, I spent a lot of time decorating my house and concentrating on projects like that, until a couple of years when I started to read blogs.

I had no clue what a blog was until a friend introduced me to the blogging community. I immediately started to read different blogs, all of my creative juices that had been bottled up for so many years just started to flow again. Now, it just seems so natural for me to create as many things as I can in my spare time. I feel off balanced if I don’t squeeze in a project between loads of laundry and feeding my eight month old.

I have interviewed and read about other artists who have shared similar statements about putting their creative interests on the back burner because we listened to someone elses rules about our expression until something happens and we begin to get in touch with and listen to our own inner artist again. Welcome back.

You were published in Artful Blogging which I think is quite a credit to you. What would you do differently to feel like you were in the same league with your favorite bloggers?

I feel a little disconnected from the blogging community since I live in Arkansas and there are not many people I have found that live by me that blog or understand what I do. It seems like so many of them live in California and are all friends. Some of my neighbors that have come over will take a peak into my craft closet and the first thing they say is, what do you do with all of that stuff? It gets a little tiring to hear stuff like that. It seems like many of the workshops are far from where I live and I have never attended any of the workshops or mixed media events that are out there hosted by many of my favorite bloggers. I am so excited that I will be attending Silver Bella this year and I am hoping to make connections with many of my favorite bloggers. I think once I meet many of the bloggers out there that I admire, I will feel more connected to them.

I would love to attend Silver Bella at some point. What a wonderful opportunity for you and one I hope you enjoy thoroughly.

What are your favorite bloggers doing or sharing that you admire most?

I admire bloggers that write about living a life that is infused with beauty on a daily basis and truly are living a vintage inspired lifestyle. Andrea Singarella and Heather Bullard are two women who are a perfect example of someone who can turn a simple item into something that represents simplicity and beauty at the same time.

I’ve got to say that your work is as lovely and top notch as any I’ve seen out there. I wanted to talk about the impressive list of publications in which your work appears. How did you first start publishing work?

A couple of years ago, I received an email from Jenny Doh requesting some information on some crowns I made out of chicken wire for a swap. I sent them in for her to review and she asked me to write a feature article for Somerset Studios on my crowns. When you post something you have created on our blog, you never know who may be looking at it.

Very true and how exciting to think of possibilities like this.

Do the Somerset publications ever ask you to submit work?

Yes, once you are on their mailing list as an artist, you will receive emails asking for submissions for projects that are needed by the publication. My problem is, I work full-time and have three girls (and a husband) and I just simply don’t have the capacity to create as much as would I like to. I would love to have one weekend alone to just sit and create as much art as I could.

Oh WOW! I had no idea but have wondered how some seem to get published so often. I admire those who are able to juggle full time jobs and family. It is challenging yet you still manage to create beautiful works to share with the world.

I think my next question has been covered to some extent already but I will ask anyway. Has the subject of being a regular contributor to any one publication ever come up or do you already feel like a regular contributor?

Yes, it has come up. The magazine considers myself as a regular contributor to Somerset Life magazine and I serve as a Bonne Vivante for the magazine along with a select group of artists. As a Bonne Vivante, the magazine sends out themes (on a quarterly basis) that will be featured in up coming issues and I help with developing projects that revolve around the pre-determined themes. This is where my insecurities come into play….the list of other Bonne Vivantes are very impressive (Connie Govea Stuart, Pam Garrison, Sandra Evertson, Lisa Guerin, Rebecca Sower, Amy Hanna, Hanne Matthiessen, Analise Sledd, Melissa McCobb Hubbell, Kristen Robinson and Cynthia Shaffer). I still look at those names and I have to pinch myself that I am among this impressive group of women.

Do you feel that being published has built name recognition for you and drawn more buyers to your work?

Yes, I do think being published has built up name recognition but I don’t always have a lot of art for sale. I usually create things and have trouble selling them because I get too attached to my artwork.

Do you create specifically for each publication’s calls or do you find that you have such a variety of work that the calls for entries seem to fit you rather than the other way around?

Yes, I do create things specifically for a publication if needed. They usually have some sort of theme that the work needs to revolve around. When I am creating, I normally just create anything that I want to. My favorite thing to create is collages using vintage photos and millinery flowers and trims. I will never tire of that medium.

I noticed that you were involved in a paper doll journal swap, a project that has some resemblance to a recent project of my own which is what drew me to yours. This layout you put together is soooo cute! I love the idea of adding outfits only. How did this project come about and what made you decide to participate?

I found three boxes of vintage paper dolls at the flea market and I knew I had to use them in my art. I have done other projects revolving around paper dolls in the past (one past paper doll project will featured as a month in Somerset Life 2010 calendar) and I decided it was time to create another project with them.

What was the purpose of the project?

I just adore paper dolls and I really wanted to work on my journaling (just creating more journals in general) so I decided to ask a few of my blogging friends to participate in a paper doll round robin.

How many others were involved?

There are thee other fellow bloggers are involved in the project. Andrea Singarella, Heather Kowalski and Holly Abston.

Would you participate in something like this again?

Yes, I would love to explode this idea and make it bigger. If you have any suggestions, let me know!

AWESOME!! It would be my absolute pleasure to collaborate on something. I think it would be very exciting.

What inspires you to create the pieces you create?

It is a variety of things, going to the flea market and finding a box of paper dolls or a vintage dress with the best ruffle on the hem. Reading a Stampington magazine and being inspired from an article that I read. Perusing through my favorite blogs and looking at all of the eye candy out there. The inspiration is endless but my time is very limited.

What prompted you to begin creating vintage pieces in particular?

I have always loved items from the past and it just killed me to store them away in boxes or drawers. I love mixed media art because that is a perfect fit to incorporate those items that have been hidden away for years and transform into something wonderful.

Have you worked in other mediums such as painting or drawing?

I am working on improving my painting skills and I am reading different books on various techniques that I can incorporate into my work. As a little girl I always sit and draw for hours and I don’t do it any more. I am not sure why? I would love to doodle like Pam Garrison or Holly Abston. I think I need to just put a sketch pad in my purse and see what happens.

Are there any artists in particular you feel have had a significant influence on your art?

Pam Garrison’s art is my absolute favorite and I adore anything that she creates. In my opinion, she is someone who can create beautiful things from any medium and look like she is an expert in that medium. I am so excited to be able to finally meet her and attend two of her classes at Silver Bella this year.

In what ways have they impacted your art?

How she uses vintage items in her art as well as not being perfect in your execution. To me, it is much more interesting to the eye if elements are not symmetrical and lines are not perfect. She strikes me as a person who just goes with the flow in her art and I admire that.

I am finding more and more evidence of artists who are actually earning a living with their creations which I absolutely love hearing about because it gives other artists hope that it is possible to do so. Do you have this kind of relationship with your art?

Yes, I do and I think all artists have an emotional connection with their art. Sometimes, I get way too attached and I need to let go and let others enjoy my art.

What advice would you give to other artists who are reaching for successful self-employment as an artist?

The one thing I would recommend to start a blog if they do not have one. It is a great way to connect with others who follow your art as well as reaching an entire new audience.

How do you define artistic success and how would you measure yours?

For me, I know I will never be a self-employed artist (unless I win the lottery) so defining success to me as an artist is getting validated by other artists who’s work you admire.

Wine Lover's Delight ~ Staying cool in Sizzling Seattle

When faced with record breaking temperatures in the tripple digits, what's a girl to do in a house with no AC? Forget the shopping, a cool beverage and some pallet cleansing fare will do me just fine. The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 3 toured the wineries of the Northwest this week when Heidi added her creative style to the project with this magnificent journal entry. Thank you Heidi, I enjoyed the story.

Today I went wine tasting. It's so beautiful to walk into a winery with its fresh flowers, colors, scents and of course wine! I sipped both the white and red, 5 different kinds, sampled salty, crunchy crackers and bits of cheese in between each pour.

The wine maker was there explaining how they grow the grapes, which varieties are best and what food is best paired with each wine. I learn so much about wine when I go tasting. One of my favorite parts is to try and guess the other flavors that make an appearance along with the grapes such as black cherry, currants, sage, chocolate and any number of other tastes and smells. Then I try to see if it matches the description on the label. Sometimes I even get it right! All in all, one of my favorite days and I am thrilled to be able to share it with you. It's official, I'm a wine lover.

She even added illustrated ankles complete with dancing shoes. OMG! How perfect is this? Thank you so much Barb. I am deeply appreciative for your participation. :)

Surf's Up! ~ Doll No. 2 Hits the Beach

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 2 spent some time on the beaches of the beautiful Pacific Northwest recently and she has a new name. Keep reading to find out what it is.

I finally arrived at my new destination ~ Seattle, Washington!!

It was very exciting as I walked up the sidewalk to Victoria's home, and as she opened the door we both squealed with delight at finally getting to meet! We sat down over a cup of tea, as I was so jet lagged after my exciting trip to Paris and becoming a Georgia Peach so to say.

Of course what could be expected here for my stay??? THE BEACH!!! As you can see by my tan lines, or maybe lack of (tee hee), we took a trip to the ocean! What beautiful shores they are here in Washington, but I must admit . . . the water, though beautiful, was sooo very COLD! Of course before we could go to the beach WE HAD TO SHOP! I had to have all the right things for my beach attire. You will see my picture here with my favorite color! I am sad to leave this beautiful place in the Northwest, but I have new adventures to go on so off I go to Springfield, PA to visit my new friend Heather!!! See you in a few days! Fond farewell to my new friends in Washington.

I LOVE the fantastic colors and design work in these pages. Thank you so much Brittany for your bold and beautiful contribution to the project.

Brittany says: Of course we had to make our way to Mexico for some margarita's and shopping. She ended up buying a lovely Chica dress that she wore later that evening when I took her out to some Artist receptions. Next day we went on a few nature hikes and took in some wonderful photo opts. Looking forward to our next visit together !!!!

I know I know, others are so dainty and pretty and here I come bold and big... But that's how I roll!

Doll No. 2 ~ Puttin' on the Ritz with Glam and Glitz

After arriving in Paris and meeting the handsome and suave Monsieur, our girl was at a loss for something to wear for a night on the town under the Paris stars.

Kittie loves bling and shiny things and polka dots too! So when she saw this sexy little number, she just had to have it!! Who can blame her really? She will be the star of the evening!

Here's a little something direct from the finest boutique in fairyland. Imagine being able to shop anywhere for anything. What would it be?

The Artful Paper Doll will be launching a new tutorial called Uptown Girls. Learn how to make pretty paper dolls complete with doll hair and miniature roses (no wings on these girls) and mount her in a boutique style setting. Tell me about your favorite girlie things. I might use them in the tutorial and you could win a surprise to be announced during the celebration of the Mad Tea Party on June 27th!

Mad Tea Party ~ June 27th

Vanessa of A Fanciful Twist is hosting her 2nd annual Mad Tea Party on Saturday, June 27th! It is sure to be the blogging social event of the season and everyone who is anyone will be there! For details on how you can play or find out more follow the white rabbit.

On June 27th I will be celebrating myself silly right here on The Artful Paper Doll with my very first ever (on this blog anyway) blog giveaway! I don't want to spoil the surprise by letting the rabbit out of the hole, so to speak, so mark your calendar for June 27th and meet me here. Only then will you find out what yummy secrets the Mad Hatter has in store for you!

Photos were scanned from a copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that was given to me by my father when I was a child. This book is at least 30 years old if it's a day. You can see the yellowing pages. What a treasure, and one of the few things from my childhood that managed to survive.

TADS Official Sign Up

Not to be confused with the "Official" Participant List, it occurred to me that I did not have a centrally located place for people to sign up to participate in the TADS project.

This project is open to any artist world wide and not just my network members. Keep in mind that you could be mailing internationally so if this is a problem, best let this sleeping dog lay and pass on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, don't you think? (tee hee :) That being said, I have a pretty good idea of where in the world my TADS participants are. Feel free to ask me before you sign up to find out if your position would require you to mail internationally if it would, you can always wait for a spot that wouldn't however, it will be your responsibility to follow-up with me.

To officially add your name to the list (which you can see here) simply leave a comment or e-mail me at kreynolds@papercatdesigns.com and I will add you. Feel free to check back often to see when you can expect to receive your doll.

TADS Doll No. 4 ~ Think Like a Queen

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 4 spent time with Tristan in Connecticut and found out she truly IS a queen. Thank you so much Tristan, for showing our girl that being queen is not a state of being but an attitude that all of us have within us if we will take but a moment to listen. Think like a queen for the queen is not afraid to fail.

I eagerly anticipate my journeys around the world. So many people anxious to meet me makes me feel like a queen.

I am the queen of my world and the master of my destiny. I listen only to the voices of my higher self, echoed softly from deep within my soul. They are steadfast in their knowing that I am the only one who clearly sees that path life's journey made just for me. With joy and bliss as my guiding lights, I will not fail, I can not fall.

Doll No. 1 Pirouettes Through the Desert

The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium (TADS) is pleased to update you on Doll No. 1 and her visit to sunny Tempe, AZ last week. She brings us tales of crafting with Gail by day and dancing under the starts with the Prima Ballerina by night in a beautiful new gown made just for her. What a romantic picture don't you think? A name has even been suggested for our girl which I very much like ~ Bella Rosa. Let's find out what she has to tell us before she speeds off to continue her southwestern tour in the grand state of California.

My next journey was to Tempe, AZ. There I met Gail. I introduced myself and told her my name is Bella Rose. It is very hot in the desert southwest so we stayed indoors and played in Gail's studio. We painted, sewed and we even made my new beaded bracelet I am wearing.

My favorite outing was to the ballet. How did she know I always dreamed of being a ballerina?? We went to see Swan Lake and I was lucky enough to meet the Prima Ballerina! After hearing of my love of ballet, she arranged for me to participate in a special performance. What a dream come true!!

I will be on my way to my next adventure. I will always remember my special day and a chance to have a dream come true.

Wisteria Dreams: Doll No. 4 Off to Beautiful Connecticut

There is something so romantically delicious about a garden. As blossoming wisteria cascades eagerly around my arbor columns like fairies bursting with a great story to share, I become one with nature's song. She is my quiet, shady retreat where the life force of the soul meets the creativity of the mind. I have had many a conversation with the summer breezes in this sacred place and listened to her secrets being whispered upon the wings of hummingbirds. Here among the vibrant blooms, I have made friends with uncertainty and embraced possibility and in the fullness of my appreciation for the vitality my garden breathes into me each and every day, I offer up my gratitude for the sweetness of all her gentle gifts.

I was going to do a tutorial on the making of this journal page but half way through I forgot to make scans. *sigh* I guess that what happens when you become so involved in creativity. Here is Doll No. 4 and she is ready to make her way to the beautiful state of Connecticut.

For this page I wanted to do a garden theme because I love the peacefulness of a beautiful garden, especially the garden of my dreams which still lives in my dreams until it manifests as reality. Using journals as a visual aid can help you manifest dreams more quickly and so I have captured the essence of how a garden looks and feels to me. I hope you enjoy.

Limited Engagement! A Performance at the Moulin Rouge

Oooh la la! The Traveling "paper" Art Doll Symposium's (TADS) Doll No. 2 visited the UK this past week and was invited to perform at the Moulin Rouge! The talented Amanda Howard of Maygreen Fairies added her magic to the project and I am just delighted with what she created.

"Well Kitty has been having a wonderful time here with me, she arrived in good ol' Blighty earlier than expected so it gave us the chance to get to know each other a bit before catching the Euro Tunnel Train to Paris. Kitty said that she had always wanted to perform with the Follies or Bluebell Girls at the Moulin Rouge, and as I had a friend working there I managed to make her dream come true."

"She visited a Paris Designer to have her Follies Corset Dress made to measure, it is a gorgeous corset made of satin and lace with a peacock feather skirt "Who says feathers are just for birds!" And she had a beautiful feather fan to dance with."

"When she has finished her stint on stage the beautiful outfit can be hung from a swallows feathered wing so it can be carried safely wherever her journey may take her next."
